Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue ( TLAER ) Class

The Emergency Service Corp of New Castle County hosted a class to provide emergency responders the ability to remove large live stock from transportation vehicles in the event of an accident.

The classroom portion demonstrated proper techniques of shoring the trailer, packaging of the animal, removal of the animal from the trailer, handling of the animal once removed and construction of several trailer types that can be encountered.

New Castle Police Department was on hand to provide emergency responders the opportunity to demonstrate packaging techniques and handling.

Special thank you to New Castle Police for bringing the horses for demonstration, Michelle Hassel and Carol Skibinsky for bringing their trailers for demonstration of construction purposes.

Deck Collapse - 1 Trapped

Talleyville Fire Company was dispatched to an injured person possibly trapped under a deck.  A25 and Rescue 25 arrived to confirm that a worker was trapped underneath a deck that failed and fell from the dwelling.  A request was made for ALS, Trooper 4 and County Collapse Team response.

USAR13 made the response along with County Collapse Team members to assist with the rescue operation portion of the incident.

The incident consisted of a Pancake and Lean Too type of collapse.  The occupant was trapped at the pivot point of the pancake and lean too collapse making it difficult to gain access to the patient.  Collapse Team members provided initial shoring of air struts and followed up with wood shoring.

BLS and ALS were able to gain access and start providing patient care about 17 minutes into the incident.  Collapse Team members were able to build box cribbing to provide a stable base platforms for the air bags to be able to lift the decking material off the patient to be able to properly package the patient for removal.  Once the patient was properly packaged, the patient was removed from underneath the decking to awaiting EMS personnel.

Patient was transferred to Trooper 4 for transport to CER for further evaluation.

Motorcycle crash victim visits Claymont

On Saturday, June 19th Claymont and Brandywine were dispatched for the MVC involving a motorcycle on I495.  13 and 11 crews arrived to find that the motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and landed in the back of an SUV becoming trapped.  Fire Department and EMS units worked together to extricate the victim for transport to CER.

Today, August 28th, Shamayim Cannon the motorcyclist paid a visit to Claymont to thank the crews that were involved in the incident.  Shamayim sat and talked with firefighters about the incident and gave an update on his condition.  He is doing fine, currently healing from several broken bones.  Claymont Fire Company would like to wish Shamayim a speedy recovery and good luck as he works towards graduating college.

House Fire: 18 E. Avon Drive

0309 hrs, the box alarm was dropped for the house on fire, bringing Claymont, Engine and Rescue 11, and Engine 25.  E132 and Deputy 13 arrived together with the Engine establishing their own water supply and the Deputy establishing the 'Claymont Command'.  The Engine crew stretched the 300 while the bar man started a search of the residence.  Ladder 13 arrived and split into an inside and outside team.  The outside team threw ladders to the residence and went to the roof, and the interior team began opening up the walls and ceiling on the delta side of the house.  Command placed the incident under control, with 13 units being committed to assist the FM unit.

Motorcycle wreck on the Pike

2002 hrs, Claymont along with Medic 4, Trooper 4, and Rescue 25 were dispatched for the MVC involving a motorcycle on Philadelphia Pike across from Archmere Academy.  B13 arrived first and began patient care of the motorcyclist.  E132 arrived and assisted with patient care and controlling any hazards.  Trooper 4 was utilized and flew the patient to CER.  Deputy 13 placed the incident under control with units clearing shortly after.

0504 hrs Claymont was dispatched to assist Brandywine Hundred (11) on the working house fire.  FM 8 arrived with fire showing from the 1st and 2nd floors.  Rescue 13 arrived behind the first due engine and split up in an inside and outside team.  The outside team threw ladders and began opening the roof.  The inside team started searching the residence and finished extinguishing the fire on both floors.  E132 arrived and assisted opening up and extinguishing any hidden fire.  The fire was placed under control by command with 13 units clearing shortly after.

MVC with Multiple Entrapments - I95 NB at Naamans Rd

Claymont, Brandywine Hundred, New Castle County Medics and Delaware State Police Helicopter were dispatched to an MVC with reported multiple entrapment's.

Chief Harris arrived and confirmed two occupants trapped in the driver and front passenger seats and a third occupant in the rear passenger seat.

Rescue 13 arrived and stabilized the vehicle and began extrication with the removal of the driver door, front and rear passenger door and roof.  The crew performed a dash roll off the drivers lower extremities.

A11 and Medic 1 triaged, treated and transported the occupant in the rear passenger seat.

B13 and Medic 4 triaged, treated and transported the occupant in the front passenger seat.

A13 and Medic 4 traiged, treated and transferred care to Trooper 4 the occupant in the driver seat.

Grottos Pizza fundraiser for Fallen Firefighter John Glaser

August 11th from 4pm-9pm, there will be a fundraiser being held at the Grotto's Pizza on 202 to raise money for Fallen Firefighter John Glaser's family.  20% of all tabs will be donated towards the John Glaser Memorial Fund. 

FF Glaser was killed in the Line of Duty while performing a search for trapped victims in a house fire.  FF Glaser leaves behind his wife and two small children.

Engine Cover Assignment Station 20

Claymont was dispatched to provide an engine cover for Holloway Terrace while they were providing mutual aid to Goodwill on a residential fire.

MCI on Harvey Road

1856 hrs Claymont was dispatched for the MVC.  E132, L13, and B13 responded from Sunoco where the company was participating in training.  While units were enroute, fireboard advised of a unconscious patient as well as a reported car fire.  A13 arrived first to find a two car head-on collision with numerous priority 1 patients as well as by-standers utilizing fire extinguishers on the engine compartment of one of the vehicles involved.  A13's crew split up and began to triage the patients.  E132, L13, and B13 arrived and the crews split up assisting A13 with patient care.  E132's officer established the 'Claymont Command'.  Command requested 5 additional BLS units as well as 2 additional ALS units.  All patients were transported to CER.
