The Claymont Fire Company is located in the Northern section of Delaware, New Castle County. We serve a metropolitan area just north of the City of Wilmington. The first due of Claymont Fire Company consists of a variety of residential communities, commercial strip malls, industrial parks and complexes, assisted living facilities, and multiple Garden style developments. We also provide mutual aid to many departments surrounding our first due covering a vast majority of structures. We will be receiving a new Pierce Arrow XT Engine (ultra low hose bed) and Pierce Rescue/Engine in the near future.
The company responds to about 1100 firerescue calls and 4000 EMS calls a year (EMS is paid), this number is increasing with the growing community we serve along with mutual aid given to other departments. We provide automatic mutual aid to about 11 departments with the engine, ladder or rescue with the services ranging from vehicle extrication, fire suppression, and as the Rapid Intervention Team. Training at Claymont is strongly encouraged with company level training being held every Tuesday night and when members feel they want or need to train. State and National level training is paid for by the company.
The live-in program offers individual rooms to 11 members with access to high speed cable internet, wifi, and Comcast digital cable in every room. The station offers other amenities which include a gear washer and a regular washer and dryer for personal clothes or sheets, a fully equipped kitchen with vending machines, a game room with a full size pool and ping pong table, a full gym, another game room with a PS3 XBOX and a Wii, and 6 showers in the station.
A bunkroom is available if all 11 rooms are full, which can hold up to 4 additional members. There is also a study room available if a quiet location is desired for schoolwork. In exchange for free-living accommodations, the company requires that members perform station duties, attend trainings/meetings, and respond to emergency calls. If you wish you are able to be a resident at the Claymont fire company and receive mail at the station.
For those planning to attend a post-secondary educational institute in the area, the live-in program is financially advantageous. Within driving distance are many schools including University of Delaware, Delaware Technical Community College, Neumann University, Widener University, Widener Law, Goldey Beacom College, Wilmington University and Delaware County Community college. Less than a half mile away is the Claymont train station which has access to Amtrak and Septa rail systems which can take you to the northeast corridor in less than 15 minutes where more school are available.
Firefighters with previous training and experience will be given first consideration in the live-in program. All firefighters with any recognized level of training are encouraged to apply.
Some of the requirements to become a live-in member with the Claymont Fire Company are:
- Must be able to meet the minimum availability requirements of staffing fire apparatus for a minimum of 48 hours per week and one weekend a month
- Must be able to comply with company policies and procedures
- 18 years of age
- Possession of a high school diploma, or GED
- Employment and/or educational requirements: Full time student (minimum 12 credits per semester) or employed a minimum of 20 hours per week. A combination of the two is accepted
